February General Meeting

Raspberry Pi 4 First Impressions

Speaker: Greg King, Retired IT infrastructure consultant

Raspberry Pi 4

In June 2019 the Raspberry Pi 4 was released with a significant increase in performance over previous models. It can now be considered a desktop replacement for most people. Greg King has been playing with one since shortly after Christmas 2019 and finds it to be a very capable little device.

In this presentation, Greg will provide an overview of the Raspberry Pi 4 hardware and operating systems. He will also give a demo of various aspects of the Pi, including OS install, initial configuration, desktop functionality, and multimedia functionality.

Greg King is a CUUG board member and retired IT professional who still enjoys computing as a hobby.

January General Meeting

Quantum Without Solace

Speaker: Dr. Thierry Lavoie, Ph.D., Manager - Static Analysis Technologies (SAT), Synopsys

Quantum Computing: Ion Trapping; Y. Colombe, NIST

Long-touted as a game-changing breakthrough in machine learning and the doom of modern cryptography, quantum computing has entered a new era in 2020: that of quantum supremacy. But, what is quantum supremacy exactly? Does it mean that common cryptography algorithms will soon be broken? Does it mean quantum computers reign supreme over classical computers? Or is it an overinflated phrase and quantum computing is still only a proof of concept?

This talk will demystify what quantum computing is and what quantum supremacy is. It will evaluate the impact of quantum supremacy and describe a world with increasingly powerful quantum computers. It will also explore the theoretical links between classical computers and quantum ones, showing that quantum computers cannot escape some classical limitations.

Dr. Thierry Lavoie is a former senior engineer turned manager in the Software Integrity Group at Synopsys. He holds a Bachelor of computer engineering, and a Master's degree and a Ph.D. in static program analysis from the University of Montreal, where he also lectured on compilers and data structures for several years. He is currently the principal voter on the ISO C++ Standard Committee for Synopsys. He has implemented parsers for PHP, Java, and C/C++, has a knack for exotic data structures, and loves designing software for complex problems.

November General Meeting

Linux Networking & Security: Current & Future

Speaker: Raymond Burkholder, One Unified Net

Raymond Burkholder

A survey of Linux networking and security abilities, from the simple to the complicated, for the home, office, enterprise, and datacenter.

Audience participation is encouraged. Not all questions may be answerable, but a pointer in the right direction probably will be available.

Raymond Burkholder thrives on surfing the edge of the tech wave. He has collected a set of skills via a career evolution of embedded firmware/software/hardware, Windows consulting, Cisco networking, Linux administration, ... all of which give him a good background for troubleshooting tough cross-discipline problems. Currently, anything having to do with packet delivery is a topic of interest. Think for a moment what that touches!

October General Meeting

Security and Privacy for the Connected

Speaker: Raymond Burkholder, One Unified Net

Raymond Burkholder

There are two sides to every story. Some enjoy having timely and appropriate ads and notices delivered on their favorite platform. The ease of communicating is practically frictionless. From a certain perspective, cool. But from another, is that a good thing? During this talk, various facets of what we see and what we don't see are explored.

September General Meeting

Android - What is under the hood? Should you care?

Speaker: Ryan Medeiros, computer hobbyist

Ryan Medeiros

Our cell phones have integrated the functionality of many separate devices. They are small and powerful. They are ubiquitous.

We take them everywhere we go. We depend upon them. However, these devices are black boxes to most of us. We hope we know what our devices are capable of, what the stakes are for depending on them. We hope.

In this presentation, Ryan will show some findings based on the research for his contributions to PostmarketOS. His goal with this presentation is to explain and help you understand some of the inner workings of smart phones and how they can bite you.

Ryan Medeiros is a fan of free/libre software, open source, copyleft, Creative Commons and an alternative web. In his free time, he contributes to various free/libre open source software (FLOSS) projects especially PostmarketOS, a mobile OS for older devices.

He likes to analyse a problem from all angles and sides, flip them inside out and explore further, before picking them apart. He loves obsolete computers, obscure systems and musical synthesizers.
